Helping your child during university move-in day can be extremely challenging. To make the move as smooth as possible, we’ve put together a list of tips and tricks so you can have a stress free and organised changeover this September! From packing tips for fragile items, how to handle the stress, and the important and unnecessary items that your child will need, we’ve got you covered!
Positivity is Key!
One of the most important things to remember is to stay calm! We understand it can be a testing and sad time, however it’s crucial to stay positive so it can be remembered as a happy experience. Whether it’s hanging clothes, unpacking supplies, dealing with fragile or heavy boxes, the key is to remain calm and remember these moving tips!

Write a Checklist
Creating a checklist is a vital step to remembering everything that you’ll need during university move-in day. Making subsections is also a helpful way to keep everything organised. For example, create a heading for ‘bathroom,’ kitchen,’ and ‘bedroom,’ to ensure you can keep track of everything. And then create smaller sections for, ‘toiletries,’ ‘utensils,’ and ‘decorations,’ to avoid missing things like stuffed toys (which you know they won’t admit but will get homesick without)! Also remembering the likes of a coffee maker, bin bags, toilet paper, dish towels and those all the important documents is essential

Pack Carefully
It’s important that you keep everything protected from damage, and bubble wrap is essential to do so. It is also key to write on every box that you pack with the contents inside. This will cut your moving time dramatically and therefore save you hours of worrying where everything is. At Beehive Storage, we can help with all your packing needs, from bubble wrap to boxes, furniture covers to paper and tape, we have everything you need to have a successful transition between homes.
Get Cleaning
Once you get to the university accommodation, we suggest that you clean everything before you start unpacking. As the room has likely been sat empty over the summer months it can collect dust very quickly, and it is important to ensure your child feels comfortable in their new living space. It’s also important to test all the features in the room, such as the shower, toilet, taps, light bulbs and windows, so if there are any issues you can report them as swiftly as possible. It is additionally always a good idea to take pictures of everything in the room, any marks on the walls or furniture, and keep them to ensure protection against possible costs at the end of the tenancy – this will make all the difference!
Work Room by Room
Unpacking room by room is a good way of helping the move feel organised. Start with the kitchen to make sure your child gets the best cupboards and shelves around the room; this will be handy for them in long run, and they will be eternally grateful! The bedroom is also important as it’s likely it will have the most boxes to unpack. Organising the clothes first whilst still being motivated is always a good idea. Putting the clothes into sections such as jeans, tops and jackets will be something that will make their life a whole lot easier. You can leave the bathroom to last when you’re tired and ready to give up, as this will be the easiest to complete; the stage where they realise, they’ve forgotten their toothbrush or rolls of toilet paper!

Decorate
University move-in day can be overwhelming, so personalising their room is important for a smooth transition. Accessorising their bedroom with personal items like photos, plants, mirrors, and books is vital for them to feel content and homely. We suggest bringing their old duvet covers and pillows, because although it’s nice buying new, it will bring a sense of comfort to them that will make them feel more at home.
